WIth sliced banana, lemon juice, avocado oil or coconut oil, and a little salt, you get a perfect snack.

The crispy chips come out in thin slices with less oil that are better for you than packaged potato chips from the store.

Banana chips are easy enough to find in the grocery store but it takes a relatively inexpensive fruit and makes them pricey.

Why not look up air fryer recipes and find an easy recipe? Anyone can make yummy dehydrated banana chips and save some money, too.

Healthy air fryer plantain banana chips come out as sturdy school snacks, too. Ever wonder how many black, uneaten crushed bananas that have been tossed out at the end of the school day? Too many.

What kind of banana to use

Yes, you can use plantain bananas and make homemade plantain chips as a great snack. In this recipe, we are using plain ordinary bananas.

The recipe is the same for both plantains and bananas.

The key to picking out the best bananas for banana chips is to pick a firm and ripe banana.

You will know if the banana is overripe if when you try to cut it into slices, it turns into mush or is difficult to cut without it mushing out.

Your banana should be firm and easy to cut. If the inside of the banana has that dark brown, translucent appearance that’s very mushy, it’s definitely not right for snacks recipes.

How to store homemade banana chips

The best way to store banana chips is in an airtight container.

However, before you place your banana snacks in the container do make sure that they have cooled to room temperature.

You don’t want to place hot banana chips in a baggie.

The best method for storage is put them in a freezer baggie and then press all of the air out of it.

Next, place that baggie either in the freezer or in the pantry.

For long term storage, you can freeze banana chips for up to twelve months and still be fresh.

How to know if banana chips have gone bad

The best way to know if banana chips have gone bad is to sniff them. If they smell foul don’t eat them.

The other method is to do a visual inspection. If you see mold or growth, they have gone bad.

If the banana chips are oozing, don’t eat them.

Finally, taste them if you see none of the signs mentioned above. If they taste foul or off they have probably gone bad. The bananas may have been bad before they were dehydrated, too.

Recipe variations

The recipe for banana chips listed below is for making basic plain banana chips. They are tasty and yummy just like that.

However, we all like to spice things up and have a variety of flavors from time to time. It’s a pretty healthy snack no matter how you “slice” it.

There are countless recipe variations that you can use. Here are a few of my favorite ideas.

Cinnamon – Sprinkle a dash of cinnamon on the banana slices before baking.

Lime – Add a tablespoon of lime juice the mixture.

Brown Sugar and Cinnamon – Add a teaspoon of cinnamon and a teaspoon of cinnamon to the mix.

Spicy – Add a dash of cayenne pepper and chili powder.

Ranch – Add dried ranch seasoning to the mix.

On ice cream – Crush and sprinkle on top of a dish of ice cream

Tips and Tricks

  • Spray the air fryer basket with a bit of nonstick spray between rounds.
  • Slice the banana chips thinner if you want a crispy chip.
  • Slice the raw banana as evenly as possible so that the chips cook evenly.
  • Consider using a mandolin slicer to get even thin slices.
  • The chips generally aren’t crunchy when you first pull them out of the air fryer. They will harden as they cool.
  • It is best to put them on a cooling rack when removing them from the air fryer but if you don’t have one go ahead and line a plate with a paper towel.
  • Don’t stack the banana chips when cooking. Be sure to cook them in single layers.
  • You could use coconut oil instead of olive oil. Just remember that it only takes a little oil.
  • Be sure to store dehydrated banana chips in an air-tight container. You’ll keep a crunchy chip this way.
