Unemployment Tax Rates

The Unemployment Tax Rates in Wyoming are assigned per W.S. 27-3 Article 5. Employers with at least three years of “experience” on their account will be assigned a base rate calculated on their specific benefit ratio. They will also be assigned three additional rate factors. The base rate and these three factors when added together will result in their total tax rate for the calendar year. Annual rate notices will be mailed to these employers no later than December 31 of the prior year. New employers (with less than three years of “experience”) will be assigned a base rate calculated on their specific industry. They will also be assigned three additional rate factors. The base rate and these three factors when added together will result in their total tax rate for the calendar year. Upon completion of a Joint Business Registration (and Out of State Questionnaire for businesses not residing in Wyoming), a new employer will receive a notice of their rate. If an employer fails to complete their registration prior to submitting their report, they will be assigned the highest base rate possible which is 8.5%. If you have questions about potential rates for a new employer, please call the Unemployment Tax Helpline at 307-235-3217.

Refund of Unemployment Credit

In some instances, employers may overpay their contributions to the Wyoming Unemployment Insurance system. If you have a credit on file that you will not use in the next four quarters, please send an email to dws-csp-uirefunds@wyo.gov requesting a refund. This does not apply to any credit incurred due to the executive order 2021-08 that resulted in a tax rate adjustment. Please note that the refund request must come directly from the employer. Any requests for refunds submitted by a third party payroll or accounting service will not be accepted.
