Valentine’s Day Heart Cookies (2024)

Valentine’s Day is coming up soon. The day of the lovers… or as I would say “the day of the florists and candy manufacturers to increase sales” ;P I got no flowers for you today, but some delicious Valentine’s Day Heart Cookies. Something you could make for a loved one or other people you like… there is no reason to limit yourself here. Make as many people happy as you can ;)

As you might have noticed – I am not the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day. I think it’s a cute idea and I don’t mind doing something nice for a loved one or surprising him/her with something… but for me, it doesn’t have to be once a year in February. If you want to make someone happy you can do that all year round. That doesn’t mean that I would not be happy about a Valentine’s Day gift or surprise, but if nothing happens on February 14th – no problem at all ;)

Even though Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to come with big gifts, some delicious sweet treats can’t hurt, right? If you like to bake, this not only making someone else happy – creating something nice makes bakers also happy… at least in my experience ;)

Well… back to the cookies. These little fellas are cute and pink, of course. The color of Valentine’s Day ;) If you don’t like hearts, you can use other shapes – triangles, circles… also pink is not mandatory. How about some blue cookies? All up to you.

Unfortunately, because of the way these cookies are made with the two colors, you can’t use leftover dough to create more cookies the same way. The colors will mix and you will end up with marbled dough… which is fine. So if you want to use all of the dough, you will end up with two different types of cookies. There are worse things that could happen ;P

(40-45 cookies)

1/2 cup (120g) butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup (100g) sugar
1 medium egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 cups (260g) ;all-purpose flour
1/3 cup (40g) cornstarch
1/4 tsp. salt
few drops pink food color
1-2 tbsp. pink sanding sugar*

(40-45 Cookies)

120g weiche Butter
100g Zucker
1 Ei (M)
1 TL Vanilleextrakt
260g Mehl (Type 550)
40g Speisestärke
1/4 TL Salz
einige Tropfen rosa Lebensmittelfarbe
1-2 EL rosa Dekorzucker*

DIRECTIONS / ZUBEREITUNG

1. Add the butter and sugar to a large bowl and mix until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until well combined. Mix the flour with cornstarch and salt and add to the bowl – mix until just combined. Take about 2/3 of the dough out, shape into a ball, flatten and wrap in plastic wrap. Place in the fridge. Add some drops of pink food color to the remaining dough in the bowl and mix on low until the dough is evenly colored. Adjust the color with some more food color if necessary. Wrap in plastic wrap as well and place in the fridge with the other dough for about 30-40 minutes.

2. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Line a baking sheet with baking parchment and set aside. Roll out the pink dough on a floured surface to a thickness of about 0.2 inches (0,5cm), sprinkle evenly with the pink sanding sugar, and press that sugar lightly into the surface of the dough. Use a small heart cookie cutter* and cut out as many hearts as possible. You can collect the leftover dough and roll it out again, sprinkle with some more sanding sugar and cut out more hearts. Set aside.

3. Roll out the light dough with the same thickness as the pink dough and cut out hearts with the same small cookie cutter you used for the pink dough. You can do that randomly or create a pattern with the hearts. Press the pink hearts into the openings you created in the light dough. If pink sanding sugar ended up on the light dough, you can remove it with a brush. Cover everything with a large piece of plastic wrap. Use the rolling pin and roll over the dough to press everything slightly together – do not use too much pressure or you will deform the hearts. Now use a larger heart cookie cutter* and cut out heart cookies from the dough layer. Transfer to the prepared baking sheet. There will be quite a bit of leftover dough – you can collect everything and roll it out again to create marbled cookies. Bake for about 10 minutes – the cookies should be firm but should not get much color. Take out of the oven and let cool down on a wire rack. Repeat with more hearts you cut out.

Note: You can easily make colored sugar. Just mix regular sugar with some drops of food color, mix well, and let dry again.
